What is TEC cooling technology?

TEC Semiconductor cooling, also known as thermoelectric cooling, is based on the Peltier effect, which is a phenomenon where an electric current flowing through a junction of two dissimilar conductors creates a temperature difference across the junction. This effect is utilized in semiconductor cooling devices, commonly known as thermoelectric or Peltier modules.

The component of TEC

The fundamental component of a thermoelectric cooling system is the thermoelectric module, which consists of two ceramic plates sandwiching a series of semiconductor elements, typically made of bismuth telluride or other thermoelectric materials. These semiconductor elements are doped to create an n-type (electron-rich) and p-type (hole-rich) junction.

How does it work?

When a direct current is applied to the thermoelectric module, electrons in the n-type material gain energy and move to the p-type material. This movement of electrons causes heat to be absorbed from the cold side (the side in contact with the object to be cooled) and transferred to the hot side (the opposite side). The absorbed heat is then dissipated into the surrounding environment through a heat sink or fan.

To enhance the cooling performance of thermoelectric modules, various techniques are employed, including optimizing the choice of thermoelectric materials, improving the module’s design, and incorporating additional heat dissipation mechanisms such as heat sinks or fans.

Water-cooled Systems with TEC

The basic setup consists of several components: TEC modules, a water-cooled heat exchanger, a pump, and a control system.

Air-Cooled Cooling Systems with TEC

Air-cooled cooling systems utilize fans or blowers to dissipate heat from the TEC modules. These systems are often compact and portable, making them suitable for certain medical aesthetics applications.

  • TEC Modules: Similar to water-cooled systems, TEC modules generate the cooling effect by utilizing the Peltier effect. They are placed in contact with the treatment area or applicator to actively cool the target area.
  • Air-Cooled Heat Sink: Instead of a water-cooled heat exchanger, air-cooled systems incorporate a heat sink with fins or a cooling plate. The TEC modules are attached to the heat sink, and the airflow generated by the fans or blowers removes the heat.
  • Fans/Blowers: Fans or blowers are employed to create airflow across the heat sink. The moving air carries away the heat generated by the TEC modules, effectively cooling them.
  • Control System: The control system in air-cooled systems performs the same function as in water-cooled systems. It monitors and regulates the temperature to ensure precise control and optimal cooling performance.
